‘Exceptional Achievement Award’ For CB Richard Ellis

Dublin 24th February: CB Richard Ellis Ireland not only maintained its position as one of the ‘Best Workplaces in Ireland’, for the seventh consecutive year, but also a received an Exceptional Achievement award at last night’s Great Place to Work Awards Dinner for ‘Rebuilding Confidence’.

In making this award the Great Place to Work Institute set out to recognize an organisation who has fought back against tough market conditions and who have shown determination and imagination whilst doing so. CB Richard Ellis won this award for its ‘Stop Surviving and Start Succeeding’ initiative.

Commenting on the exceptional achievement award, Deirdre Bodley, Executive Director, HR & Operations, CB Richard Ellis Ireland said “together we focused on the positive aspects and strengths of our organisation and worked hard to create a positive environment in which we could do our best work. This award was in recognition of something that we built together and making the best workplace listing for the 7th consecutive year is something that we can all be very proud of”.

The study of Irish Workplaces, conducted by the Great Place to Work Institute, is the largest annual labour force survey undertaken in this country and this year, over 100 Irish organisations, with a total workforce of over 50,000, participating. The study mirrors that undertaken by Great Place to Work Institute affiliates in 40 countries around the globe each year, involving 4,000 leading organisations and their 10 million employees.

It’s the views of the employees that count when deciding if a company will make the Irish ‘Best Workplaces’ list. Employees in each participating organisation complete a confidential questionnaire, rating their employers on a range of elements including management credibility; respect; fairness; pride; and teamwork or ‘sense of family’. The questionnaire aims to establish the extent to which employees feel that theirs is a great place to work – one where you ‘trust the people you work for, have pride in what you do, and enjoy the people you work with.’

Surveys are returned directly to the Great Place to Work® Institute by each individual employee, therefore ensuring confidentiality – and honesty!

Commenting, Mr. Bob Lee, CEO of the Great Place to Work Institute in Ireland said: ‘We congratulate CBRE on their inclusion among the Best Workplaces in Ireland for a seventh consecutive year and for their Exceptional Achievement Award - this is a fantastic achievement, particularly considering that the commercial property sector has been among the hardest hit sectors of the economy. CB Richard Ellis’s leadership team has managed not only to maintain but continually build the trust of its people despite, like most businesses, having to take and implement many painful business decisions.’

Mr. Lee said that ‘these awards confirm the value of building an organisational culture through dedicated leadership that helps withstand the most difficult and damaging economic environment’.

‘Our work with these companies is ongoing with many, such as CB Richard Ellis, making multiple appearances in the ‘Best Workplaces’ awards over the last nine years. It is clear that the companies who are working hard to build and maintain the trust of their employees are best positioned to accelerate their recovery as economic conditions improve.’

Commenting on the announcement, Guy Hollis, Managing Director at CB Richard Ellis said employee satisfaction and engagement is an important ingredient for business success. “It is no accident that if employees are happy and engaged, the company performs better. The Great Place to Work survey is a valuable gauge of employee satisfaction and being recognised for the seventh year running as one of the Best Workplaces in Ireland is something we are really proud of – particularly in the context of what is very challenging environment for our industry. Our difference really is our people and together we aim to understand our client’s needs, respond quickly, deliver innovative results with integrity and have some fun along the way!”

How we compile the ‘Best Workplaces’ list:
It’s the views of the employees that count when deciding if an organisation will make the ‘Best Workplaces’ list.
A random selection of employees in each participating organisation complete a confidential questionnaire, rating their employers on a range of elements including management credibility; respect; fairness; pride; and teamwork or ‘sense of family’. The questionnaire aims to establish the extent to which employees feel that theirs is a great place to work – one where you ‘trust the people you work for, have pride in what you do, and enjoy the people you work with.’
Surveys are returned directly to Great Place to Work by each individual employee, therefore ensuring confidentiality – and honesty!

About the Rebuilding Confidence Award Category
Many organisations have had to take and implement tough decisions over the past few years, and this has had an understandable impact on employee morale and their confidence for the future of the business. And of course, these same decisions have often had a devastating impact on the management teams, who had to try to keep morale and confidence high even when they had few answers, and were often uncertain even about their own future.

In making this award, we set out to recognise an organisation that had fought back, showing both a determination to overcome its challenges, and imagination in doing so. The winner, CB Richard Ellis Ireland, ticked both boxes. Faced with an unprecedented slump in the property market and in its revenues, the company evolved its ‘Stop Surviving and Start Succeeding’ Strategy, which got everyone to focus on the positive aspects and strengths of the organisation and tried to create a positive environment in which people could do their best work. We particularly liked the ‘Stop Surviving’ concept, with its implication that it’s not enough to merely hang in there – we need to break out and thrive. It clearly resonated with their people too - 93% of all employees told us that CBRE management has a clear idea of where the organisation is going and how they are going to get there.

Also considered for this award were Diageo Ireland, whose ‘You’ conference created an opportunity for employees to contribute to the future success of the organisation, and Unicarepharmacy for their very clearly communicated and executed ‘Plan A/Plan B’ strategy.
